Most feline ear disorders are easily treatable and do not result in permanent hearing loss. Congenital issues in certain breeds of cats and age are the most common reasons for hearing loss. All white cats are especially prone to deafness. The most common issue is ear mites which are very contagious, but treatable if caught early.
- Ear Mites: Serious if left untreated
- Deafness: Serious Problem
A thorough cleaning of the ears and oral and topical medication will remove ear mites. Care should be taken to clean bedding and litter boxes. Other cats in the household should also be treated, even before showing signs of infection. Cleanliness and routine examinations can help prevent deafness as it can rarely be reversed.
